A Visit to the Home of La Marzocco – Florence, Italy
There are some places in the coffee world that every coffee professional hopes to visit one day. For me, the La Marzocco factory in Florence was one of them.
While travelling through Italy with my family this year, I was lucky enough to spend a morning at the Accademia del Caffè Espresso, home to La Marzocco's headquarters, museum and training centre. As someone who works with these machines every day, it was an experience I'll never forget.
Driving up into the hills overlooking Florence, the building itself is impressive. Modern architecture sits alongside traditional Tuscan stonework, with incredible views stretching back across the city. Before even walking through the doors, you get the feeling you're somewhere special.
A Story That Goes Far Beyond Coffee
Our guided tour started with the history of La Marzocco and the evolution of espresso in Italy.
One story that really stuck with me was learning about the challenges the company faced during World War II. Coffee imports into Italy had almost completely stopped, making it incredibly difficult for cafés to operate. At the same time, steel was desperately needed for the war effort, forcing La Marzocco to sell much of its steel to the military.
Many companies wouldn't have survived those years, but La Marzocco endured. Hearing those stories gave me an even greater appreciation for the brand and what it represents today.
It isn't just a company that builds coffee machines—it's a company built on resilience, innovation and an uncompromising commitment to quality.
Seeing the Evolution First-Hand
Walking through the showroom was like walking through the history of espresso itself.
We were shown how each generation of machines evolved, from the earliest handcrafted models through to the latest commercial machines used in cafés around the world.
Every design improvement had a purpose—better temperature stability, improved consistency, easier servicing and greater reliability. It was fascinating to see how decades of engineering have continually pushed espresso technology forward.
When you stand in front of the entire La Marzocco range together, you quickly understand why they've become one of the most respected names in specialty coffee.
Why We Choose La Marzocco
At Social Coffee Co, we supply La Marzocco machines because we genuinely believe they're the best commercial espresso machines available.
For our café customers, reliability is everything. Downtime costs money, consistency builds loyal customers, and quality equipment makes a huge difference to the coffee in the cup.
After seeing how every machine is designed and developed, it reinforced exactly why we continue to recommend them to our customers.
They're built to last.
Coffee Tasting at the Source
No visit would be complete without coffee.
After the tour, we sat down in the La Marzocco café and enjoyed a tasting of coffees roasted by the La Marzocco team.
It was great to see their approach to coffee preparation and experience how carefully everything is considered—from the roast profile through to the final espresso and milk-based coffees served to guests.
As coffee professionals, we're always learning, and it's experiences like these that inspire new ideas to bring back home.
The Home Barista Experience
One area I really enjoyed was exploring the domestic machine range.
Home coffee has changed dramatically over the past decade, and seeing commercial technology scaled down into beautifully designed home machines was impressive.
It's exciting to see more people investing in quality equipment and enjoying café-quality coffee in their own kitchens.
The Museum
One of the highlights of the day was exploring the La Marzocco Museum.
Filled with vintage machines, historical displays and beautifully restored pieces of espresso history, it tells the story not only of La Marzocco, but of Italian coffee culture itself.
The museum is perched high above Florence, and after wandering through the exhibits, stepping outside to take in the panoramic views over the city was the perfect way to finish the visit.
Bringing Inspiration Home
One of the things I love most about travelling is seeing how different parts of the world approach coffee.
Visiting La Marzocco reminded me that great coffee isn't just about the beans or the machine. It's about history, craftsmanship, continual improvement and never settling for "good enough."
It's a philosophy we try to follow every day at Social Coffee Co.
Whether we're roasting coffee, helping someone choose a machine or training a new café, our goal is always the same—to help people serve exceptional coffee.
Walking away from La Marzocco, I left with an even greater appreciation for the brand and the people behind it.
It's easy to understand why, nearly 100 years on, they're still considered the benchmark for espresso machines around the world.
